The stainless steel bristle brushes are for refinishing corroded cast aluminium alloy surfaces and were first made in 1973. The inspiration for them was the motorcycle you see in the photos

The SS for Alloy brushes are for surface refinishing of bare aluminium alloy
They remove firmly baked on deposits and corrosion from alloy without
leaving unsightly scratches or obliterating extremely fine detail and original texture
Excellent for producing a lustrous well-cared-for look on neglected alloy, the fine bristle tips
get right into the tiny pits and depressions in the surface. The mode of action is end-on agitation and further info is available here -
~ Unique Brushing Action ~
The smaller sizes enable alloy refinishing to be accomplished quickly and easily even in deep crevices such as between the fins to expose bare metal on cylinder walls and in difficult to clean areas such as around exhaust header clamps which can be covered in burnt on grime
Suitable for use on any type of alloy surface which is not polished, coated or anodised
Size C with SS bristles working on the cylinder wall. No other brushing tool or alloy refinishing method can perform in such restricted situations and none can be applied to almost anywhere on a motorcycle without the need to remove obstructing parts and/or dismantle the motor
The area to be treated can be selected with precision - the delicately patterned background of a logo can be thoroughly cleaned while the smooth polished lettering is left untouched. Unlike chemical cleaning, bead blasting or ultrasonic methods you can choose exactly where
brushing is required, and to what extent. The effects are instantly seen so unnecessary surface agitation is avoided
Sizes A, B and C reach right down to the cylinder walls on this motor
Size A is narrow enough to be angled for use on the flat finned areas
Size D at bottom is too big to get far between these fins
Size D is for use on larger areas such as crankcase castings or areas without intricate shapes
During mechanical repairs they are invaluable for removing firm residue, old sealant and threadlocking material from intricate shapes such as internal and external threads and splines, grooves, gear cogs, and are excellent for safely removing burnt on carbon buildup from the tricky spots of combustion chambers, exhaust ports, piston crowns, valve seats

The Nylon* bristles are for removing soft deposits from alloy, and for any cleaning job where the toothbrush or curled up rag won't go. They may be used dry when dusting, or with the usual cleaning detergents and degreasers for more stubborn dried muck, insects and roadgrime
Concours vintage alloy can be freshened up without disturbing the patina. The Nylon bristles work well with metal polishes and waxes in liquid, cream or paste form
With degreaser they make short work of cleaning up the rear end of regularly ridden chain driven 'bikes
* Nylon is a Dupont trade name, now a generic term

To determine which brush/s you require note that the handles sizes are in fractions of an inch just like a drill bit set. Try poking around with various drill bits into places you would love to be able to clean properly
A whole motor can be refinished with just a size A however the work will be slow and tedious over large areas where a size D should be used, but size D won't get into the tight spots.
With all four of the SS for Alloy brushes any motorcycle alloy refinishing job can be tackled easily
The four Nylons allow for thorough cleaning all over your motorcycle and can be used on dashboards, around instruments, switches, lights etc.

The brushes are extremely durable but eventually the bristle ends will fatigue or wear down
A section of the handle can be removed to expose fresh bristle ends. Each brush can be rejuvenated several times

DO NOT USE STEEL BRISTLE BRUSHES WITH FLAMMABLE SOLVENTS
Steel bristles can produce sparks which will ignite volatile solvents or vapours
You are advised to wear eye protection when using the brushes as fine particles
or solvent droplets can be propelled from the work area at high speed
Do not use near live electrical cables or terminals. Do not use near hot engine or machinery parts
All brushes may be boiled or autoclaved, but must be allowed to cool before use
For hand use only. Not to be mounted in power drills

Old corroded alloy castings respond brilliantly to wire brushing. Once the alloy surfaces have been refinished with the SS for Alloy it is easy and quick to maintain regularly ridden, all-weather motorcycles in concours condition simply by using the Nylons in the tight spots during a normal wash and wax
Here's an example of a show award winner where the brushes have been used for refurbishing the alloy. This superb total restoration/reincarnation won the " People's Choice " at the Bayles Link Run 2009, and quite rightly so
The brushes have also been instrumental in gaining concourse awards for cars -
